We recently caught up with Karen despite her busy campaign schedule and this is what she had to say.

Please tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Karen Paida Mukwedeya, my family originally comes from Mutare.   Tiri Mamoyo, in Shona. I did my primary at Nettleton and high school at Rusununguko high. My A levels were completed at Mt Pleasent High School. I went to Rhodes University for 1 year and then finished of my journalism degree with UNISA. I’ve always had hopes of being a presenter and even sent an application letter to be on Star kids at some point. BUT all those dreams and aspirations came back again when I started working at Nafuna TV and got in front of the camera. From there I started believing in myself more and pushed myself to audition and that’s when I auditioned for TLCs Next Great Presenter.

What made you decide to enter the TLC next great presenter search competition and was this your first time entering?

This was my first time entering for TLC Next Great Presenter Competition. I  entered the competition at a point in my life where I felt my life was stagnant so I needed to push myself  to greater limits so that I feel a shift in my career. It’s true when they say Gods timing is the perfect time because I couldn’t have been happier with the timing of this great news. I mean TLC is the number one lifestyle and reality channel in Africa. I couldn’t be more excited about this amazing opportunity

How was the boot camp experience?

The boot camp was so amazing. I came out that week a way better presenter than I went in. We had different workshops and an amazing performance coach who gave us one on one attention to perfect our craft and some of the judges also gave us some pointers, we also had a some people from Elle Magazine (which to me was just amazing I’m a reader of ELLE) give us some useful fashion tips as well. Apart from the workshops the boot camp was filled with amazing surprises and challenges including red carpet challenges and the screen test. The screen test was the most nerve wrecking because we had to do it in front of very prominent judges. This included Alleta the head of content at DSTV, Lee Hobbs from discovery networks,  Thando Thabete a radio and TV personality, Jared Doyle a well-known Publicist in SA and Zee Ndlandla from Zalebs. So it was a great learning experience but also quite intense.

How did you feel about making the top 3?

Making the top 3 was a huge achievement for me. It was also quite unexpected, but like I said God allows all things to work together for your good. It was not an easy ride but knowing that I made it to the top 3 out of 1600 applicants across Africa reassured me that I’m meant for this.

How is the campaign for votes going, are people responsive and supportive?

The campaign is going pretty well. Zimbabwe is very supportive the response has been amazing! So many people are sending screen shots of themselves voting and I can’t be grateful enough for this amazing support. A special thank you to everyone who is voting and voting diligently.

Who do you consider your toughest competition in the TLC next great presenter search?

To be honest I feel like we all have a fair chance because we are all unique presenters, and we all have something special and unique to offer on TLC. At this point we will all just have to find out on the 15th of November when they announce the winner.

What have you enjoyed the most about this entire experience?

Getting to appreciate my craft even more and getting to know all the amazing people that have been voting and supporting me. It’s such an honour that I continuously thank God for.

Your fashion and style is admired by many Zimbabwean women, where do you draw your inspiration from and what’s your top beauty tip?

Well, first of all thank you to all those who notice my fashion style. I think your style is defined by your personality so that’s what I would say shapes my style. It’s a reflection of who you are so don’t be afraid to embrace your uniqueness and your ‘dopeness’, because everyone has something to offer the fashion world, make sure what you offer is authentic.
Would you encourage other Zimbabweans to enter the TLC Next great presenter search competition in 2017 and why?

Yes definitely! If you know what you want you should go for it. It’s a great opportunity and an amazing platform. Like I said before TLC is the number 1 reality and lifestyle channel in Africa so you should take the opportunity when it comes.

What are your future plans and goals?

My biggest dream is to have my very own show airing on an international broadcast station.

Thats it from the wonderful Karen. Voting for this Zimbabwean beauty closes on the 15th of November. take the time to vote for the first ever TLC Next Great presenter from Zimbabwe by clicking
