Police Officer extorts sex from suspect, up for rape

CHIREDZI: A police officer raped a pregnant Mozambican woman who was in police cells to facilitate her release, a local court heard this week.

Constance Alec Mhlanga, 33, pleaded not guilty to the rape charge when he appeared before magistrate Tafadzwa Mhlanga.

He was also charged with abuse of duty as a public officer.

He was remanded in custody to 29 October for trial.

Prosecutor Liberty Hove told the court that on October 11, this year, the 21 year old woman was arrested for theft and taken to Chiredzi police station.

Court heard that she was handed over to Mhlanga and another police officer who locked her up in police cells.

The court was told that during the night the woman requested to use the toilet since the one in her cell was not working and Mhlanga volunteered to escort her while the other constable remained in the charge office.

After that, Mhlanga then led the women to the investigations room where he told her that she was facing a serious charge and the only way out was for her to have sexual intercourse with him so that he could facilitate her release.

Mhlanga then ordered the woman to hold the bench before he raped her once without protection. He then ordered her not to tell anyone.

After the abuse, Mhlanga led the woman to the charge office where she spent the rest of the night.

The following morning the woman realized that Mhlanga had done nothing to facilitate her release. She hen reported the case to another police officer who had taken over duty from Mhlanga.
