Hillary Clinton behind imposing of sanctions against Zimbabwe
AS the race to White House heats up, it seems the darling of the electorate has a lot of explaining to do. Hillary Clinton has made headlines more than her counterpart in the last few days, and all that is related to emails that have been considered as violation of state security procedures according to some state officials and the FBI.
Hillary Clinton, the wife to former United States of America President Bill Clinton might be having the toughest campaign of her life as she tries to remain the favorite candidate in the race to White House.
Unbeknown to most Zimbabweans who seem to prefer Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump is the fact that she is the one responsible for sanctions against Zimbabwe as she sponsored the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act of 2001 alongside Biden and other Senators in 2001.
The bill was signed into law in December by the then President George W. Bush and it had dire consequences on the Zimbabwean economy. Although the blame was on Bush, it seems however Clinton was heavily active throughout the process of ensuring that Zimbabwe would be put under economic sanctions.
According to the Act, U.S would oppose and vote against any extension by the respective instruction of any loan credit, or guarantee to the Government of Zimbabwe and any cancellation or reduction of indebtedness owed by the Government of Zimbabwe to the United State or any international financial institution. In short the sanctions imposed against Zimbabwe by the United States government are premised on that legislation.
A repeal of this Act was brought before the Congress in 2010, and no vote was taken. Then it was brought again in 2011 and the vote is still yet to be taken 5 years later.
