Four inmates die as cholera hits prison

MASVINGO- At least four inmates have died and 50 others hospitalised following an outbreak of cholera at Mutimurefu prison about 20 kilometres east of Masvingo city.

Healthy officials in Masvingo said over 50 inmates were battling for life after being admitted at Masvingo general hospital following the outbreak of the disease.

Masvingo provincial medical director Amadeus Shamu confirmed the outbreak of cholera at the institution .

“I can confirm that there has been an outbreak of cholera at Murimurefu but i can not give any details pertaining to deaths,”said Shamu.

Sources at the prison said that the outbreak has hit a section which houses dangerous criminals.

“At least four inmates have so far died while about 50 are still detained at Masvingo general hospital ,”said the source.

“The affected section of the prison has over 300 inmates,”added the source.

Zimbabwe prison and Correctional services acting spokesperson Priscilla Mtembo said she was not aware of the out break.

Sources said that the situation is so dire at the prison with inmates going for days without food as government has run out of money to support the institution.
The prison has a capacity to hold 750 inmates.

It also emerged this week the several Non Governmental Organisations and individuals have come to the rescue of the prison by providing food and other neccesities.Masvingo province has been hard hit with an outbreak of cholera and healthy officials are still battling to contain the epidemic.
